Welcome to Texas A&M University’s home site for A Community of Respect. This nationally recognized, award winning, cross-cultural communications workshop was developed to help trainers as they teach others to deepen their understanding of cultural diversity and its complexities.

How many times have you found yourself in a situation where you realized that a conflict occurred between you and another person that was a direct result of cultural misunderstanding? Can you identify with the following scenarios?

  • Someone consistently invades your personal space when talking to you.
  • Your employee never looks you in the eye.
  • A new student in your class is having a difficult time in school and his parents don’t respond to your attempts to meet.
  • You had a difficult time giving or getting information for a police report.
  • Your use of gestures offended your customer and you don’t know why.
  • Your co-worker doesn’t seem to value your input and prefers to talk with your supervisor.
  • Your clients arrive at your meeting 45 minutes late.
  • Someone was not explicit in telling you what you wanted to know.
  • Even though you know that you are giving the right information, your message always seems to be misunderstood

You may be thinking, “These scenarios don’t have anything to do with different cultures…does it?” You bet it does! Often times, we only think that our situations are culturally influenced when we are aware of others’ differences. However, that is just the tip of the iceberg! We encounter intercultural friction more that we realize! So, how do you know when you need to use cross-cultural solutions to handle common situations? This is where A Community of Respect can help!

Participants have found this program very successful in raising their awareness of cultural communication differences between people coming from different backgrounds.  In addition, the Community of Respect has helped Texas A&M University and the surrounding community to become a more welcoming and inclusive environment for the international faculty, scholars, students, family members and visitors that live here.

We invite you to join us in helping others in your profession or community to understand themselves and other cultures better by becoming a Community of Respect trainer in our Train-the-trainer workshop. A Community of Respect is designed for:

  • City or corporate trainers who desire to enhance their proficiency in intercultural communication
  • Fire and police personnel who want to be able to respond quickly to emergency involving foreign nationals
  • HR managers who will be assisting expatriates or foreign nationals in their company.
  • Mental health professionals who want to supplement their care with cross cultural understanding.
  • Educators and Advisors who work with international students and scholars and their families.
